Validation exercises are required to assess new products or in case of major algorithmic revision. They make full use of all existing correlative data and lead to the production of a comprehensive validation report. VAL tasks: - (AUTH, BIRA) Delta verification exercises to identify possible satellite algorithm issues (GOME-2 and IASI) - (AUTH) Validation against independent satellite data sets (OMI) - (BIRA) Validation of GOME-2 columns against ground-based MAXDOAS measurements in Xianghe (China, 40N) - (AUTH) Validation of the SO2 columns using the ground-based Brewer total SO2 columns on a global scale - (AUTH) Validation of the SO2 columns using ground-based MAXDOAS Phaethon instruments at selected locations wp_datasources: - Brewer archived total SO2 measurements from the WOUDC database - MAXDOAS SO2 column and profile data from Xianghe, China (40N, 116E) - GOME-2/Metop-A/B/C level 2 total SO2 data processed by DLR - IASI level 2 total SO2 data - OMI level 2 total SO2 data wp_deliverables: - GOME-2/Metop-C SO2 validation report - IASI/Metop-C SO2 validation report - Publication of validation results in peer-reviewed scientific literature End
